In tertiary education you’re never alone. Mentoring will provide the voice of experience to help you in times of doubt.

Read on to see how mentoring can help you. We’ll use the University of Newcastle as the example model here, but you’ll also find links to similar services at other universities - just scroll down to find details on the other partner universities.

SOS (Supporting Other Students) Mentor Program

This program is designed to make the transition into student life as enjoyable as possible. Using their own experiences, student mentors help new students within their faculty settle in to university life.

Connect 2 Success

This free student services initiative can help you reach your potential. Uncovering any academic interference, the program then suggests avenues of support and provides advice on overcoming the identified performance hurdles.

Why take part in Connect 2 Success?

Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed at university. Perhaps you’re thinking you might drop out. Maybe re-adjusting to student life isn’t happening for you after an extended time away from study. Or you may have received a warning that your academic standing is at risk. Maybe the Honours course you’re aiming for demands high scores. Essentially, as long as you want your results to improve, Connect 2 Success can help.

Port Macquarie Students

Connect 2 Success can be accessed, regardless of your campus or location. Advisors can contact you by phone or email. It could be that vital link to the main campus resources you’ve been looking for.

As a Port Macquarie student, you may also find the support you need in the following services:

Library and Learner Support Centre

TAFE North Coast Institute and the University of Newcastle have a reciprocal agreement for limited library borrrowing rights. This means if you’re a student at TAFE you can borrow from the Uni libraries; if you’re a student at the Uni you can borrow from the TAFE’s library.

The above is a bonus on top of your access to Port Macquarie campus library which provides a quiet place to study as well as access to photocopiers, computers, scanners and audiovisual equipment.

Counselling and Careers Services

Confidential counselling and careers support and advice is available to help you with:

  • Career and study choices
  • Study skills, time management, exam anxiety
  • Personal issues: relationships, decision making, grief and loss
  • Managing health issues including dealing with anxiety, depression and stress

The University of Newcastle’s Counselling Service is free of charge and available to all students. Make an appointment through the Main Office. Alternatively you can call in to the Counselling Unit in C block or phone a counsellor direct on 02 6581 6212.

Disabilities Services

Students enrolled at the University of Newcastle have access to a range of support for assistance with disabilities. Services include tutorial support, special classes and exams, sign language interpreters, note takers, large print material, Braille and physical access. Email the University Disability Liaison Officer or arrange to see the TAFE Disability Consultant in Building D at the Port Macquarie Campus – phone (02) 6581 6275.

Student Online Services

The University of Newcastle has a range of online services. As a student, you can use these to access information including eBilling, HECS invoices, course variations and examination timetables.
